Aakash tablet goes on sale for Rs 2500 online

DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.

Students' version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.

The commercial version of Aakash tablet will be powered by Android 2.3 and will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory.
Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.

"The improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end," a spokesperson of DataWind told The Mobile Indian.

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. "The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to up gradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing," the spokesperson said.

To book and pre-book student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit Data Wind's website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, "You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details."

In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, "The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible."

As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.

Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, "Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet."

This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

It looks like the company was in a hurry to start the online booking process and has not done not proper homework before staring it.

In what looks like a brilliant PR win for Google, the Royal Family of UK has selected Google as the web hosting provider for Prince William’s official wedding website. The site, available at officialroyalwedding2011.org, contains news updates, photo galleries and videos and all this is hosted on Google App Engine.

What’s new here? Web developers have long used Google App Engine to host web apps in the cloud - see Sleeping Time and Tall Tweets for example - but this is probably the first time that Google’s infrastructure is being used to host a 'static website' of an event that will get plenty of press attention and web traffic in the coming days.

Host your own website on Google App Engine

There are quite a few advantages with hosting websites on Google App Engine. First, it should be more reliable since your site will get served through Google’s own data centers.

Second, if you have a low traffic website, it is highly likely that you won’t have to spend a penny for web hosting. You get 1 GB of free storage space for hosting your images, HTML web pages and other files and 1 GB of bandwidth per day. If you exceed that quota, you pay-per-use similar to Amazon S3.

Ready to jump?

With a regular web hosting company, you rend some storage space on their server, you then transfer your HTML and other files to that server using FTP or cPanel and your website is ready to serve. Google App Engine works in similar manner except that the file transfer mechanism is a bit different.

Step 1: Go to appengine.google.com and create a new application. If you have never used App Engine before, you might be asked to verify your mobile phone number before you can create a new app.

Step 2: Give your application a name – it should be unique and may only include lowercase alphabets and digits. For this example, our app identifier is “thisismyawesomewebsite”.

Step 3: The next two sub-steps may scare some of you but trust me, they simply require you download and run two installers in the given sequence.

3a. Download and install Python from python.org.
3b. Download and install App Engine SDK from this code.google.com.

Step 4: Download and unzip this file - website.zip – somewhere on your desktop. It contains a basic website with some HTML pages, images and CSS that we’ll try to host with Google App Engine.

Step 5: Open the app.yaml file with notepad and replace the word ‘labnol’ with the application identifier that you created in Step 2 above. Save the changes.

Step 6: Finally it’s time to deploy /upload our website to Google App Engine. Open the Google App Engine Launcher program from the Start Menu, choose File –> Add Existing Application and browse to the folder where you unzipped the website.

Hit the deploy button, input your Google Account credentials and within seconds, your website should become available online at abc.appspot.com where abc is your unique app identifier. Later, if you add or modify any web page, press Deploy again and your new /edited files will get uploaded to App Engine.

Let’s say your team has just launched a new product at some conference and they have asked you to collate all the conversations and buzz happening around that product on various websites, blogs and social sites. You have to act fast because the stuff that gets shared on the real-time web often gets buried almost as quickly.

So how should you go about collecting stuff around the Internet? Should you just save everything that’s being said to your browser bookmarks? Or maybe put all the web clippings in an Excel sheet as that would be easy to share? Or how about capturing screenshot images of the chatter?

There are umpteen ways to do this but what you should really look at is a dedicated content curation tool that is designed to capture web content with minimal effort.

Don't Bookmark, Curate Online Content

A content curation tool, in simple English, lets you easily pull videos, images, presentations, tweets, blog posts and other web content into a collection which you can then embed, publish or share online. I have been testing a few online curation tools and here’s a quick review of them all to help you pick the right one for your needs.

The way these content curation tools work is quite similar to Evernote’s web clipper. You install an add-on for your browser, or a bookmarklet, and then clip content with a click.

The first tool that I tested is Bundlr available at gobundlr.com. Bundlr can automatically recognize content on YouTube, Flickr, SlideShare, Twitter and a couple of other sites. Alternatively, you may select an image or a text snippet on a page and add it to your bundle. The bundle may then be embedded in another page or you can publish it as a standalone page.

Bundlr makes clipping pages really simple, especially when you are collecting individual tweets, but I wish it supported more services and the overall layout of the bundle doesn’t look all that nice (see example).

Next in the list is curated.by – it offers a Chrome extension that adds a “Curate” button next to every single tweet on twitter.com and you can thus save any of them to your bundle with a simple click – no pop-ups needed. Curated.by can also be used for curating media content from around the web in the same bundle (see example).

Then you’ve everyone’s favorite curation service called Storify. You can add items to your Storify collection in two ways – there’s the bookmarklet to curate content from any public webpage and then you also have an integrated search where you can add items by simple drag and dropping. For instance, you may search public updates on Facebook or Twitter and drag any of them to your collection without leaving the Storify website. This works with Google search results and RSS feeds as well.

The designers at Storify have done an excellent job with the formatting and this makes your overall collection look really good (see example). You can embed Storify collections as a JavaScript widget but the most-unique part is that you can also “publish” the story to your Tumblr or WordPress blog as a new article (so you also get the SEO benefit).

You may also want to check out the new version of delicious service for curation. They have added “Stacks” which are like a collection of bookmarks but the difference is that stacks can display media content inline without you having to click the bookmark. For instance, if you bookmark a Flickr page, the corresponding picture will included in the stack page automatically and the same is true for YouTube videos or Slideshare presentations.

Unlike any other curation tool, Delicious stacks include a thumbnail feature so if you bookmark a web page, the thumbnail image of that page will automatically get included in the media view (see example). I will however give maximum points to Storify because, other than presenting your curated stories inside a clean and beautiful layout, Storify also lets you easily publish them to other sites.

Everyone wants a fast Windows 7 computer. This is especially true of people who play games. So the question is what makes a Windows 7 computer fast? How can you speed up your Windows 7 computer without paying an arm and a leg to increase the speed.

Several things make a computer fast. The most important is keeping it clean. A new Windows 7 computer is like my 2 car garage in 1985. At that time it help 2 cars no problem. Today is holds no cars. There is no room because other stuff has been stored there.

The same is true of most computers today. When they were purchased they were fast because they were empty of software. Over time software accumulated in the computer. The most egregious software is memory resident software. Often we use programs for a short time and then never again. However, these programs often have memory resident components that slow down the computer. A clean computer is a fast computer. How to clean is computer is the focus of another article.

In this article the focus is on what makes Windows 7 fast. So the first step is to measure Windows 7 speed. There are benchmarks and diagnostic programs that measure performance and speed. While they do a good job, they are not the measure on what a computer user considers fast. To me fast is responsive. Windows 7 has a responsive measurement tool called the Windows Experience Index. It is a measurement scale ranging from 1.0 to 7.9 currently. Newly purchased computers typically score in the range of 3.4 to 4.5.

To find the Windows Experience Index, click on START, then point to COMPUTER, click the right mouse button (the other mouse button), and use the normal mouse click to open PROPERTIES from the bottom of the menu. the overall rating is displayed smack dab in the middle of the display. A click on the Windows Experience Index to the right of the overall rating number should reveal the rating for each of the Windows Experience Index categories.

The Windows Experience Index measures Processor speed, Memory speed, Graphics card desktop performance speed, graphics card 3D gaming and business performance, and hard disk transfer rate. It rates the overall performance of the computer as the lowest score in any of these categories.

Many computers today have quad-core processors running at 2.5 to 3.2 GHz with DDR3 memory. Such systems typically score in the 6.9 to 7.2 range for CPU and memory speed. Generally, CPU and Memory are not a major consideration in making a Windows 7 computer fast. My laptop running an Inter i3 dual core 2.13 Ghz CPU and memory performs in the 5.9 to 6.1 range.

Disk drives in computers are Serial AT Attachment (SATA) drives. They rotate at 7,200 rpm. This is typically twice the 3,000 rpm at which automobile engines cruse. Laptop drives may run at 5,400 rpm. High performance drives operate at 10,000 rpm. So why the focus on rpm speed. A large part of disk performance is the time it mechanically takes to move the disks read/write mechanism. Part of that mechanical performance is the rotational speed of the drive. So 5,400 rpm drives are slower than 7,200 rpm drives. Most SATA drives have a Windows Experience Index of from 5.6 to 5.9.

What remains is the graphics card performance. That is the area which makes the Windows experience index run in the 3.4 to 4.5 range.

How do we make our Windows 7 computer more responsive? Changing processor and memory are costly. They are likely the fastest components already. Changes there make no sense. With Windows XP, increasing the computer's memory size from 256 MB or 512 MB to 3 GB or 4 GB noticeably improves performance. Most Windows 7 computers today come with 3 GB to 6 GB of memory.

Windows 7 64-bit Edition can use more than 6 GB. My computer has 16 GB of memory. However, application programs mostly are written to use no more than 4 GB or memory. So most of the 16 GB memory is unused. Right now my computer seems to be using 10 GB of memory. Increasing memory size in a Windows 7 computer is not likely to result in a noticeable improvement in responsiveness.

It is possible to improve responsiveness with a faster disk drive. This requires disk drive replacement. Two drives can improve performance: 1. Solid State Drives (no moving parts) and 2. High RPM drives (10,000 rpm). Both types of drives are expensive with Solid State Drives (SSD) being the most expensive. Solid State Drives also wear out over time (several years) depending upon use. The smaller the SSD, the quicker it wears out. SSD are the fastest drives because there are no mechanical parts.

One disk drive strategy is to get a small 128 MB SSD that only holds Windows 7 and the application programs and place the remaining data on another larger SATA drive. The Windows supports the Windows paging files and temporary file area. These areas are constantly used by Windows to store and retrieve data while you are working on the computer. Making that storage and retrieval process faster makes Windows more responsive.

Word, Excel, Pictures and Music files stored on another slower drive do not make the Windows 7 computer less responsive because we expect some delay every time we retrieve one of those files. My computer uses a 128 GB SSD for Windows. It has a Windows experience Index of 6.8. All my data is stored on 1TB SATA drives with a Windows Experience of 5.9. I have not tested 10,000 rpm drives as yet to determine their Windows Experience Index. The Windows Experience Index is not published for any drives because it depends in part on the motherboard and CPU to which the drive is attached.

The last area is the graphics cards. Because their Windows Experience Index score is low they offer the greatest potential for improvement. Graphics cards are advertised with high performance chips (chip sets) from ATI or Nvidia typically. They have graphics memory on the card. Fast graphics chips and more memory on the card can speed up and make games more responsive. They should make the 3D business and gaming graphics Windows Experience Index higher.

In contrast a card with a high 3D performance and a low desktop performance our computer may not make our computer as responsive as we hope. Also how we use our computer can be important. In my case I run four (4) monitors each with 1920 by 1200 resolution. So having two Digital Video Interface (DVI) connectors on a graphics card is important because I need two graphics cards to support the four monitors. Configuring the cards for responsive performance requires that the motherboard of the computer have graphics card slots (Peripheral Connect Interface Express - PCI Express connectors) that run at the highest PCI Express speed (16X speed) from both slots simultaneously.

The final consideration is the graphics card memory interface. The interface can be 64-bit, 128-bit, 256-bit or higher. Here the larger number is better. If you are a gamer and get the best performing chips (chip set) on a graphics card that only has a 64-bit interface you could find the gaming performance less than expected. Not being a game player (except for Solitaire) I may be incorrect here.

In the case of four monitors, a $100 card that has a 256-bit memory interface produces a Windows Experience Index rating of 6.8 for both Windows Desktop and 3D Graphics performance. Finding a good performing and moderately priced graphics card requires a look a the specifications and specifically the memory interface. Cards with a 320-bit memory interface or higher can be very expensive. Actually, some cost more than my motherboard, CPU and 16 GB of memory.

The last part of performance is the network interface. Computers with a 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps interface are common. Few if any computers operate at the original 10 Mbps Ethernet speed. The speed is not so important here. Internet speeds are typically slower. The Verizon FIOS speed is often slower than 35 Mbps. This is under the 100 Mbps of most computer Ethernet interfaces.

So then what is important to understand about network performance? It is simple, when a network is not working well, a Windows 7 computer slows to a snail's crawl. With a malfunctioning network interface (or any Universal Serial Bus - USB interface) it looks like someone poured liquid nitrogen over the computer so it is frozen solid. This can also happens when the batteries in your cordless mouse die.

So a responsive Windows 7 computer is determined more by graphics card performance and memory interface, as opposed to CPU speed, Memory speed, and disk drive speed. Any network, USB or mouse problems tend to stop everything. Keeping the computer clean from unused and memory resident software helps as well.

Skype for Business too risky?

If you're thinking about using Skype for Business as a way to save money you might want to put it off until the courts settle lawsuits that swirl around plans to sell the company.

That's the advice of Irwin Lazaar, an analyst with Nemertes Research, who otherwise regards the company's enterprise offering, Skype for Business, as a viable way to save on long-distance calls. "Skype's future is very much in doubt," he says. "I would wait at least six months or a year for the legal wranglings to work themselves out."

Skype's founders want to buy it back from eBay and have filed lawsuits that could jeopardize use of essential code that the founders still own. Without the code, the risk of Skype for Business being disrupted is serious enough that customers should beware relying on it, Lazar says.

Legal uncertainties aside, Lazar says Skype for Business is a significant opportunity to reduce long-distance costs. Any of Skype's 16 million users can call a Skype-enabled business and customers for free, helping to control costs for contact centers or remote corporate employees, he says. The service can also complete calls to non-Skype numbers using the Internet as a long-distance backbone and then dropping calls off at local public phone exchanges for completion.

A range of VoIP and IP video vendors support Skype, making it simpler for their customers to integrate Skype with the vendors' commercial offerings. These include Cisco, Shortel, SIP Foundry (part of Nortel) and LifeSize, and there are talks with Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft, says Stefan Oberg, general manager and vice president of Skype for Businesss. Since LifeSize is a telepresence vendor, this relationship suggests future video integration with Skype.

Skype certification means customers of these vendors can receive and send Skype calls via the certified gear. Inbound Skype calls are free, and businesses can buy Skype minutes to make outbound calls from phones attached to the certified call servers. Calls are carried between callers' local Skype points of presence to Skype POPs close to called parties, eliminating long-distance charges, via a service called Skype for SIP.

Skype for Asterisk is a separate program that supports the same features through open source Asterisk IP PBXs, plus it adds the ability to call Skype names from the PBX. Skype has also certified session border controllers from Acme Packet that facilitate the interoperability of IP PBXs with Skype's network.

Skype for Business is still in beta testing, a program for which 9,500 businesses signed up when it was announced in July, he says.

By receiving inbound Skype calls, businesses can reduce their 800-number costs because anyone with a Skype client or Skype phone can contact the business for free, Oberg says. Businesses can put a Skype calling button on their Web sites, so people with Skype who are browsing these sites click on the button and are connected to the business via a Skype call. He says a French insurance company receives 10% of its customer calls via the button on its Web site.

Hotels could use Skype for SIP for connecting potential customers visiting their Web sites to reservation agents. Once they make reservations, they could give friends and colleagues the Skype name for the hotel so they could acquire Skype clients and make free calls to the guests during their stays, Oberg says.

Some businesses are using consumer Skype clients for business purposes even before the service Skype for Business becomes generally available by year-end.

Maxim Integrated Products, an analog computer-chip maker based in Sunnyvale, Calif., says it saved $90,000 over the past year with an informal Skype program. The company bought Skype's all-you-can-use outbound calling to the United States and Canada for $30 per user per year for 2,000 users. The company installed a Skype client on each PC and issued a headset or USB handsets to the users, says Walter Curd, Maxim's CIO. They don't have to use it, but those who did saved the company $150,000 in long-distance fees in one year, a net savings of $90,000, he says.

Only 20% of the users use Skype heavily, he says, and about 20% don't use it at all, with the rest using it sometimes. Most use it for talking with fellow employees at other company sites, he says.

Maxim beefed up the bandwidth on some of its Internet connections to insure they didn't affect Skype call quality, he says, but because of lower pricing, that didn't increase the cost to Maxim. "The problem with Skype is the quality of the internal network, not the quality of the Internet," he says.

Maxim's primary phone system is made up of traditional Nortel PBXs, with Skype being used as a supplement that adds desktop video and instant messaging to the communications mix, Curd says. The company already uses Polycom teleconferencing gear, but it requires scheduling rooms in order to use it. "I can never get the room for conferencing with my direct reports," he says. So he issued them desktop Web cameras and videoconferences over Skype instead.

The downside is that Skype drops about one in 50 calls. "But hey, it's free. Just call back," Curd says. "You complain about Skype, but who hasn't had a dropped call or call quality problems on a cell phone?"

He says he is aware of the lawsuits against Skype over its code. "There's uncertainty. The [suits] could in effect shut them down," he says. "It would be disappointing, let's put it that way." But Maxim would still have the Nortel phone system to fall back on.

He says the company could use Google voice --– another inexpensive VoIP peering service -- but likes the fact that Skype makes money from its service, meaning that it has to deliver a certain level of service or fail commercially. "The problem with Google is it's not their business, it's their hobby. I might consider them when they're making money at it," he says.

Meanwhile, as the lawsuits make their way through the courts, experts advise caution, since a ruling might at least temporarily halt Skype's use of necessary code. "If you're considering using Skype as the most important part of your business voice, you're going to want to wait and see," says William Sofega, an analyst with IDC.

PandaLabs, which is part of the security firm, said that if the threats are unsuccessful after a day they become inactive and harmless. Instead, cybercriminals modify the threat's code to ensure their creations go unnoticed by users and security vendors.

"This is a never-ending race which, unfortunately, the hackers are still winning. We have to wait until we get hold of the malware they have created to be able to analyse, classify and combat it. In this race, vendors that work with traditional, manual analysis techniques are too slow to vaccinate clients, as the distribution and infection span is very short," Luis Corrons, PandaLabs technical director.

The security firm also recently revealed that fake antivirus solutions, which attempt to steal money from web users by luring them into paying to remove nonexistent threats, are on the rise.

In its Business of Rogueware report, PandaLabs said around 35 million new computers are infected with fake security software every month.

The company also revealed it expects to record more than 637,000 new rogueware samples by the end of Q3 and it estimates cybercriminals are earning approximately $34m (£21m) per month from the scams.

"Rogueware is so popular among cybercriminals primarily because they do not need to steal users' personal information like passwords or account numbers in order to profit from their victims," said Corrons.

"By taking advantage of the fear in malware attacks, they prey upon willing buyers of their fake anti-virus software, and are finding more and more ways to get to their victims, especially as popular social networking sites and tools like Facebook and Twitter have become mainstream."

Yesterday’s rumor about Apple being interested in Twitter was ridiculous. But the headlines now - not rumors but more like unsolicited suggestions - suggest that Twitter should instead be on on Microsoft’s radar (and Google’s, too, for that matter.)

Microsoft is reportedly close to a cutting a search deal with Yahoo. Intel looks beyond PCs, eyes new segments

The future is in personal computing, not just personal computers, according to Intel CEO Paul Otellini who said his company wasbetting on new market segments such as netbooks, handhelds and consumer electronics to drive growth with PC sales likely to be “flat or slightly up” this year.

Intel, whose range of microprocessors power almost 80% of computers worldwide, also announced that it

has built working chips that pack 2.9 billion transistors in an area the size of a finger nail.

Delivering his keynote at the Intel Developers’ Forum 2009, Mr Otellini also launched an Intel Atom Developer Programme inviting third party programmers to create new programs for its Atom line of microprocessors. Atom powers net books — bare-bone PCs with small screens for net surfing and word processing — a segment, which Mr Otellini said was holding up the whole computer market now.

“We have the worst recession in 70 years. The netbook filled the gap,” he said, adding that Atom will eventually cover connected devices. “At the highest level, every electronic device is likely to be connected to the Internet at some point in time. And we think the architecture to do this, obviously, is Atom,” he said.

Netbooks outpaced the two other popular devices in the consumer market — Apple’s iPhone and the Nintendos gaming console Wii — in the past three quarters, he added. In-vehicle infotainment systems, which clocked a 17% growth rate in the year when the automotive industry slipped to a recession, are another growth area for Intel.

Mr Otellini said that a company that Intel has been working with over three years, Harman Becker, has secured two major design contracts for Atom-based systems. “Daimler will put it into their S-Class and C-Class series starting in 2012, and BMW is developing a cross-platform, which means it goes across all their models, as an option for 2012 and beyond,” the Intel CEO said.

Intel has also begun factory production of its 32 nanometre chip, and the latest one — the 22nm one — continues to deliver the promise of Moore’s Law: smaller transistors, improved performance and lower cost, said Sean Maloney, Intel’s executive vice-president.

“The rapidly increasing number of transistors and processor instructions we add have made possible the integration of more and more capabilities and features within our processors. This has driven an incredible amount of innovation throughout the industry, with the real winners being the consumers, gamers and businesses,” he said.

Imminent Crisis in Forex Markets?

The only thing predictable about currencies these days is that they will remain unpredictable. Forgive me for speaking in cliches, but when you consider that the last twelve months have seen both record rises and record falls, I think a cliche might be justified in this case. We’ve seen the Dollar soar, only to collapse again. On the other side, we’ve seen the bottom fall out from emerging market currencies, before rising 20-30% in a matter of weeks.

Volatility levels have certainly declined (see Chart below) from the record highs of October 2008, when Lehman Brothers collapsed. At the same time, the oft-cited VIX index remains well above its average over the last decade. This suggests that while investors may have been lulled into a relative sense of security, serious doubts remain.

If the current rally is to be seen as “legitimate,” then perhaps the worst of the 2008-2009 recession is truly behind us, and the global financial system has been given a reprieve from a meltdown. The concern going forward then will naturally shift past the steps that governments and Central Banks are taking to fight the crisis, towards the long-term economic impact of those measures.

Jim Rogers, a famous and perennially outspoken investor, is now sounding alarm bells over the possibility of “meltdown” in currency markets, due to inflation and currency debasement that he views as an inherent byproduct of quantitative easing and deficit spending.

Most of the attention is being focused on the US, whose stimulus and monetary programs are probably larger than all other economies in the world, combined. Offers one analyst, “We keep very low U.S. Dollar exposures because we think a further devaluation of the greenback is imminent, and we see a structural weakness for at least a number of years.” Meanwhile, there is speculation that the US could soon receive a ratings downgrade, following a similar threat by S&P directed towards Britain. But this remains highly unlikely.

The problem that Rogers (and all other investors who are worried about currency debasement) faces is how to construct a viable strategy to protect yourself and/or exploit such an outcome. Rogers himself has admitted, “At the moment I have virtually no hedges…I’m trying to figure out what to do there.” The difficulty can be found in the inherent nature of currencies, whose values are derived relative to other currencies. While you can short the entire stock market or the entire bond market (via market indexes), you can’t short all currencies simultaneously- at least not yet.

Instead, you can pick one currency or a basket of currencies, that you believed is best protected from currency collapse and buy it against threatened currencies. But how do you deal with an environment when all currencies appears equally questionable- when all governments all loosening monetary policy and risking inflation? Really, the only answer is to invest in commodities that you think represent good stores of value, such as oil or gold, or the currencies that benefit when prices of such commodities are high. Naturally, the relationship between commodities and currencies is not cut-and-dried, and if the currency system were indeed beset by meltdown, it’s not clear to me that commodities would hold their value.

As you can see, the most significant change over the past few years has undergone a balance of trade impact on the movement of the dollar against the euro. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, throughout this time period, the report on gross domestic product was one of the most important economic indicators, and led to the smallest relative motion of the pair EURUSD. One possible explanation for this may lie in the fact that reports on gross domestic product fell less frequently than other data taken into consideration (a quarterly basis to monthly).

In addition, data on gross domestic product more prone to ambiguity and incorrect interpretation. For example, growth in gross domestic product, due to increases in exports will contribute positively to its currency. However, if the gross domestic product growth occurred as a result of building inventory, the impact on the currency can be rather negative. These factors are very important to keep in mind the currency traders, regardless of what (technical or fundamental) trading strategies they use.

For technical traders, trading in the range, it would seem logical to stay away from the market before the publication of data on the payroll of the non-agricultural sectors, while traders trading for a breakthrough, a publication of the data on the contrary provides excellent opportunities for trade. For fundamental traders, these results are also important, because the adjustment of the exchange rate in relation to the economic news seems to be happening very quickly - a reaction beyond the 15-30 minute period after the release of data may be the result of over-reaction of investors and trade-related with the flow customers, not only to the news. Gross domestic product is, in this respect, a perfect example, because the 20-minute reaction in the list is higher than that day.

Trading as a game

Trade like a game of football. What determines the professional level of your game? Preparation is key. A whole week passes before you go out to play with opponents. You are viewing a movie from playing another team, you start to follow the team, players, etc. Then, you treniruetes. Successful intra-day trading is more luck or skill? Can be studied intra-day trading? Does a successful intra-day trader is different from a successful position trader? Does intra-day trading more benefits than the position?

Determination of intra-day trading

In summer 1968, after the my first few transactions on the commodity market (as it was called then). I quickly learned that the traders trading in the exchange hall, had a clear advantage over the rest of the audience. Traders in the exchange hall at the center of all activities. They knew the prices before they know all the rest. They traded for the minimum fee, and they seemed to know news that affect the price, before all others. During one of my visits to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, I talk to the former stock exchange floor trader on the balcony for the visitors, and he asked what my trade interests. I said I had to learn how to broker turned to my account and that my knowledge of trade is very limited. He asked me whether I «positional trader» or «intra-day trader». I admit that have not heard any of these terms. He proposed the following definitions: intra-day trader trades in the interim period, one day, entering and leaving their positions during the day, but always close the transaction by the end of the day, regardless of whether they are winning, losing or empty.

This definition seemed to me quite logical. But the definition of positional trade made me stop and think for a moment. He identified the positional trade as intra-day trading, which finishes the day with losses.

After a few moments definition struck me, and I laughed. But under my obvious joy was typical of the market the truth, which never left me since that day. It is clear that the ability to take a loss at the end of the day is likely to be the salvation of many traders, because the vast majority could not accept their losses, when required, in accordance with their system, implying, of course, that they have a system!

Leaving the old ideas

While many traders are strongly opposed to intra-day trading, I do not agree with that. Long-standing cliche that has been given to intra-day trade and intra-day traders should be revalued and left. As I said earlier, computer technology, and competitive commissions and spreads altered intra-day trade once and for all. In fact, if you logically understand the advantages and disadvantages of intra-day trading, compared with the positional trade, the «balance» clearly tilted in favor of intra-day trading. This is - my list:

There may be others as the «for», or «against». Of the above, the most important «for» is - a quick way out of losses and immediate feedback on their results. How should these two compelling advantages of intra-day trade and I hope you agree with my assessment. But enough of philosophy and psychology - let us turn to the approaches and methods.

Technical intra-day trading

Please note that I believe that the intra-day trader would be absolutely technical trader, as opposed to fundamentalists. While, ultimately, the fundamental factors can control the market in the long run, they are not so important in the intra-day time scale, with the possible exception of price fluctuations based on the news. Effective intra-day trader has a method to capture the traffic arising from the emotional reaction to important news.

In his book «Capable of intra-day trader» I distinguish four main approaches to the intra-day trade from following the trend to trade on the support or resistance. All of them are viable methods that can also be and the technical methods of positional trade. The following is a brief overview of each method, including their advantages and disadvantages:

Breakthrough trend and following the trend

Of all the methods of trade, following a new trend or a purchase of a break up and sale to break down, ultimately, may prove most effective. According to him, the trader should be the price when they move higher or lower entering the market in the belief that the «new peaks generate new maxima», and «new minima give rise to new minima». The system of trade at the break begins with an excellent work Keltnera in the 1960th, who set the tone in the various methods used in their favor maximum and minimum price for this time format. S & P 500 in the chart below shows the ideal situation for the intra-day trader who buys at the break of resistance. As is typical for this method - although the purchase of a break up or sell to break down, tend to work fairly well, it's quite difficult to do psychologically to the majority of traders, and it requires that traders deployed position, in case of error. There are many approaches to finding, verification and risk management systems for trade breakthrough.

1. Content is King

The quality of the posts you write is the single most important factor when it comes to Search Optimization on a Blog. I suspect others will argue differently but as I look at my own blogs success in the search engines I’d say that this has been the number one factor.

Quality content that helps people will quite often draw a reader to want to share what they’ve written - of course they do this by passing on the link to your post and often they’ll do it in a way that helps your search rankings (on their own blog for example).

2. Anticipate What People Will be Searching For

Every time you write a post you should be automatically be considering what words people might be putting into search engines to find that type of information. Once you know what kinds of words they’re using you’re in a great position to position yourself for that search.

3. Titles Titles Titles

There are a number of things to keep in mind when it comes to titles. Google pays particular attention to titles - so make sure you get them right:

first make sure that the way you set your blog up puts the title of your post in the ‘title tags’ on the back end of your blog. This is really important.
if you’re just looking from an SEO perspective don’t include your blog name in the title tags of single posts. This dilutes your keywords. Of course if you’re looking more at branding including your blog’s name in the title tags might be worth doing.
next - include the keywords that you identified in point #2 in your post title
also, keep in mind that the words you use at the start of a title tend to carry more weight than words you use later in your title

4. Keywords in other parts of your post

Use the keywords you identified in point #2 within your post also. If you want Google to rank you for a term or phrase you need to use that term or phrase. Use it in sub headings in your post (use h tags where you can), use it in the content itself, use the words in the alt tags of images etc. Don’t go over the topic but do use the words where you can naturally in the post.

5. Link to Your Own Posts

Don’t over do this one but while links from other sites are a great way to increase your blog’s rankings so are links from your blog. Interlink your posts to share where readers can find more information on your topic (where relevant) but also consider linking to key posts on your blog from other places on the blog (sidebar, front page etc).

6. Links from Outside Your Blog

Links from other sites to yours are key in SEO but they can be hard to get. Start to linking to your blog from other sites that you have or are active on. Some (like on Twitter) won’t count for anything much as they have no-follow tags but they are all potential ways forpeople to access your site and some will help with SEO.

Don’t become obsessed with getting links - rather become obsessed about writing great content and the links will generally come in time. However if you’ve written a great post that you think will be relevant to another blog don’t be afraid to let that blogger or website owner know about it - they could just link up.

Also - take note of the type of posts that you write that do well at getting other sites to link to you. You can learn a lot about generating linkable content by doing so and might just develop a technique that will work again and again.

7. Plugins

I don’t tend to do much to the back end of my blog to alter things like meta tags - but there are some good plugins around if you’re using WordPress that can help with some of this and that may give you a small edge. 8. Readers Begat Readers

This isn’t an SEO technique as such but it plays a part. The more readers you have the more likely your blog is to be found by other readers. There’s a certain ’snowballing’ thing that happens on a site over time - as you get readers quite often momentum grows as those readers pass on your site to others in their network. They link to you, they bookmark you, they tweet about you, they email friends about you, they blog about you, they suggest your site in recommendation engines….

Not all of this counts with SEO but some does and the accumulation of it over time all certainly helps to grow both organic and search traffic. I guess what I’m saying is to get readers any way you can - don’t just focus upon ‘SEO’ as such. It all counts.

My Hunch with SEO

Before I share my hunch…. let me say that I’m not an SEO and this could be completely wrong…. but it’s a hunch that I’ve had for a while now.

I’ve been doing this blogging thing for almost 7 years now and from what I can see the tweaks that many bloggers do on their blogs to optimize it seem to be having less and less impact on the rankings of blogs. Don’t get me wrong - I stand by the above tips completely and would do them as a common sense bare minimum - but from where I sit Google seem to be in the business of finding the best information that they can for their users. They don’t always get it right but I think they do a pretty good job.

As a blogger your job should be to provide the best information that you can.

It strikes me that Google have an ever increasing way of working out if your information is good. It’s not just about what keywords you have or how many links that you get - but these days they own Feedburner (know how many people subscribe to your blog and what links people are clicking on), they own Google Reader (again giving them all kinds of great data), they own Gmail, Google Analytics, YouTube etc…..

Now they may or may not use all the data in their ranking of sites but they certainly could know a lot about your blog and the posts you write. There’s also been increasing talk over the last 6 months or so about how easy it’d be for search engines to start generating data on what content is being shared in social networks and bookmarking sites.

My hunch is that many traditional SEO methods are less important (NOT irrelevant though) and that other factors are increasingly going to come into play. I’m sure that some will work out ways to manipulate this (SEO 2.0?) but increasingly the way to get ranked high in Google will be that you just need to keep producing great content and making sure that it’s sneezed out to your network.

Help this process along by giving your readers way to share your content (and seed it to social networks) as well as to become subscribers.

Improve Your Search Rankings with Internal SEO

1. Look at Your Stats

Find out which pages you are getting traffic to from the search engines and what keywords are being used to get there. This is where we need to focus. Improving your ranking for a term from 7429 to 43 takes your traffic from 0 to 0. If you can improve from 9 to 1, you will see a huge increase in traffic if it is a phrase that people are searching for.

Now that we have a few pages that are getting some traffic and the keywords they are getting it from, we have to do a little keyword research.

2. Keyword Research

The first step is to find out which phrases we want to target. Look at the keywords that are getting the most traffic and find out where you currently rank. You could use your web analytics program for this, and then check the rankings on Google.

At this point, you can also use a keyword search tool to find out how much traffic each of these phrases gets.

Now we want to focus our efforts on the terms we rank the highest for that get the most search traffic.

3. Internal SEO

Have you ever written anything similar to this before? Go through your archives and find where you have mentioned this topic before. Update the old article with a link to the new one using the keywords you are trying to rank for.

If this is a topic that people want to know more about, consider writing another post or two expanding on the first one. In each new post, link to the original article with one of the keyword phrases you are targeting.

Next, go back to the post you are hoping to rank higher. Is the keyword already in the article? Consider making it bold. Is there a section where the phrase would make a good header? Consider adding it. Don’t stuff the article full of keywords as you still want the people that come to enjoy your writing. However, if these changes can be made without affecting the quality, they may help improve your ranking a little bit.

These things do two things. They show the search engines what your pages are about (hopefully the keywords you are targeting) and they show them that they are important pages. The more links you have pointing to the page, the more important you are making it in Google’s eyes.

4. Watch your Rankings and Traffic Surge

I went back to my post and made the keyword bold when I used it. Then I went through the archives and found another post that talked about the stimulus package and added a link to the new post. I also wrote a few more articles in the following weeks that talked about the stimulus package, so I linked back in each of those as well. The result? I moved up to #1 in Google for the phrase “government stimulus package” before it passed. It brought thousands of visitors to my blog, and the week that the bill passed is my highest traffic week ever.

The part of this that is really powerful is that all of this was done several days after the article was posted. The regular readers had read it already, and anyone who was going to link to it already had. I was then able to move from #6 to #1 in Google simply by telling Google what the page was about and that I thought it was important. Never underestimate the power of linking to yourself internally.

7 Incredibly Useful Tools for Evaluating a Web Design

An effective web design is one in which your users are able to find information quickly and in a logical fashion.

Do they visit the content you want them to visit? Are they looking in the right places of your web page? Are you able to keep your user’s attention, or do they just leave quickly?

It’s not just about the content either. If your design loads slowly - or if moving from one section to another takes a long time - it affects the user’s experience.

These things can be the make-or-break factors between a user clicking on a link to find more information, or the back button to find it elsewhere.

Some things to consider:

Are important information being seen by the user?
Are the navigation and action items intuitive?
Is the user being directed to sections in a logical manner?
Does the web page load quickly enough to not turn away the user?
If you’re interested in analyzing and optimizing your page layout
here’s some extremely useful tools that you can use to help.

1. ClickHeat

ClickHeat is an open source visual tool for showing “hot” and “cold” zones of a web page. It allows you to see which spots users click on most, and which spots are being ignored.

It’s very easy to implement on your website, you only have to include an external JavaScript file.

2. Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg offers a myriad of analytical tools to help you visualize what visitors are doing.

Features include: Confetti - allowing you to see what people are clicking on based on certain factors such as their operating system and where they came from, Overlay - providing you with tons of data about particular links, and Report sharing - enabling you to share the data with team members and clients.

The free version only allows 4 pages to be tracked - so use your top landing pages to get the most data.

3. YSlow for Firebug

A key tenet of a strong design is that, not only should information be presented in a logical and elegant fashion, but that it must also beserved quickly, with very little delay.

YSlow for Firebug is a free tool for Mozilla Firefox that gives you information about your front-end design to see if it performs well. It gives you a letter grade (A through F) and outlines your web page’s trouble spots.

It’s based on the Yahoo! Developer Network’s “Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site” initially written by Steve Souders, who was once the Chief of Performance at Yahoo! and is now working over at Google on web performance and open source initiatives. Downloads: Firebug extension for Firefox (required) and YSlow.

4. clickdensity

clickdensity is a full suite of usability analysis tools that will help you assess your web page design.

You can use heat maps showing where users click on the most, hover maps - which shows people scrolling over links but not clicking on them, and A/B Tests which allows you to change certain page elements to see which style is more effective.

The free subscription give you 5,000 clicks and only one page and one site to monitor.

5. ClickTale

ClickTale offers a lot of user data pertaining to how visitors use your website.

There are plenty of things you can look at such as average time it takes for a user to click on a link, a user’s hesitation on clicking a link, hover to click ratio, and much more. It also provides detailed reports and charts on your users’ monitor sizes to better optimize your web page design to cater for the typical visitor.

6. Clicky

Perhaps the most interesting feature that Clicky has is its real-time tracking and monitoring feature, called Spy (check out the demo here).

Besides Spy, there’s a host of other analytics data you can look at such as user Actions - which records click data from your users andVisitors - providing you user data.

7. Google Analytics

One of the best free services that Google offers is Google Analytics and probably the most well-known analytics tool. It’s incredibly easy to install and offers plenty of user and content data to help you learn more about your web pages’ performance.

It has a feature called Site Overlay, which gives you a visual representation of the popular places your users like to click on. It also offers data on bounce rates and your top exit pages (to see what pages make users leave).

These SMP-enabled parts feature a second 6.4GT/s QPI link to broker inter-CPU communication, which is the main difference between them and desktop parts. As far as specs are concerned, the processors support tri-channel DDR3, 4MB or 8MB L3 cache, and an 80-130W TDP. The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series includes many of the same breakthrough technologies that radically improved system speed when the Core i7 desktop processor was launched. The Intel Xeon W5580 (BX80602W5580) is the fastest of the Gainestown processors as it operates at 3.20GHz with 8MB of L3 shared cache and a TDP of 130W. Due to this the processor has an MSRP right around $1600 USD each! While I would have loved to get my hands on a pair of Xeon W5580 processors, I was able to get a pair of Intel Xeon X5570 processors to benchmark!

With a clock frequency of 2.93GHz the Intel Xeon X5570 is still a force to be reckoned with and as you can see from the CPU-Z shot above. According to the CPU-Z readings and from what I could tell in the BIOS this 95W TDP processor runs at idle with 0.936V and at full load at 1.104V. These are awesome voltage numbers that are being seen from a recent D0 stepping processor. With a full 8MB of L3 shared cache and a 6.4GT/s QPI link this processor should destroy any other processor that we have ever benchmarked here on Legit Reviews.

It should be noted that on the Intel Xeon X5570 the processor operates at 2.93GHz with DDR3 memory speeds up to 1333MHz. Under certain conditions, Intel Turbo Boost Technology can provide operating frequencies up to 3.33 GHz, depending on the processor and system configuration.

Let's take a look at Cinebench R10 and find out! I'll also be including the performance results of a pair of Intel Xeon E5520 Gainestown processors that operate at 2.26GHz with a full 8MB of shared L3 cache, but a lower QPI of just 5.86GT/s. Thanks to the lower QPI speed the DDR memory can only run at 1066MHz.

Those two socket AM3 processors are called the AMD Phenom II X3 705e and Phenom II X4 905e. They both feature 2.5GHz clock frequencies, 200MHz bus with a 2000MHz HT link and memory support for both DDR2 (up to 1,066 MT/s) and DDR3 (up to 1,333 MT/s). With specifications like this, these processors are ideal for an Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC) and any other application where noise and heat are a concern

The first of the energy efficient Phenom II processors would be the budget friendly Phenom II X3 705e, which can be purchased for a cool $129.99. This is a triple-core processor that uses the 'Heka' core and designed by GLOBALFOUNDARIES at Fab 1 in Dresden, Germany using the 45nm DSL SOI (silicon-on-insulator) process. The processor runs at a very low 0.825V-1.25v for normal operation and has an overall clock frequency of 2.5GHz. The processor is multiplier locked with a 12.5x multiplier as it is NOT a Black Edition processor. If you want to overclock this processor you'll have to do that by increasing the 200MHz base clock. The CPUs HT link is set to 2000MHz and features the full cache levels, which are 512KB of L2 per core and 6mb of L3. Featuring a 65W TDP means that the Phenom II X3 705e processor at 2.5GHz has a TDP that is 30W lower than that of the AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition processor at 2.8GHz.

Taking a closer look at the Phenom II X4 905e processor with CPU-Z 1.52.1 you can see that this is a quad-core processor based off the 'Deneb' core, but the clock frequency and multiplier remain the same. Basically, this processor has all the same features that the Phenom II X3 705e processor has with the addition of the extra core. This processor is ideal for those that are using multi-threaded applications for CPU intensive tasks as four cores will obviously run faster than one even though each core has less shared L3 Cache.

Google’s Terms make it very clear that they have the right to kick someone out of their program whenever they feel like it and you have to prove your innocence.

But the people at Google aren’t a nasty bunch and they will listen to you if you feel you’ve been hard done by. Your first step then should be to send them an email asking why you’ve been banned.

The most likely reason will be invalid clicks. That might not mean that you’ve accidentally clicked your own ads. Google accepts that accidents do happen and takes occasional clicks like these into account. They’ll show up as clicks in your stats but you won’t earn revenue from them. Nor do you need to inform them every time your cursor accidentally lands on one of your ads. But if it’s more than occasional, you could be in trouble. It’s possible that someone else might have been clicking ads on your site repeatedly — perhaps a competitor hoping to hit your earnings or a family member who didn’t know it was forbidden.

It’s also possible that someone has stolen your AdSense code and placed it on their own site. I have answered that question at least 10 times on Yahoo Answers and several times over email. Instead of responding to yet another question individually, I thought of creating this reference post – and time permitting a series itself – here on this blog.

How people discover your blog or website?

Before looking into the technical details on what it takes to increase the search visibility of your blog, one should understand how people discover your website content or blog posts on the web. Unless somebody already knew about your website, there are only three major ways for a total stranger to find you on the web and they are:

#1 Advertising: Online/offline advertising, Exchange advertisement programs, PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising, SEM (Search Engine Marketing), Article marketing etc

#2 Referral links: Blogrolls, Directory listing, Forums, RSS/Feed directories, Social bookmarks, Social network links etc

#3 Search Engines: Via Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask etc.

Off the above three, the most popular method used by people to find information on the web is via search engines. It, probably, is also the most sustainable model for long term to drive traffic to you website or blog.

Now the process of optimizing your site content to make it search engine friendly and easier to spot by the search engine bots is what is known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

How Search Engines find information?

The World Wide Web (WWW) in principle is a huge repository of millions of interconnected PCs and information stored in them. So, in order to get your blog or website content to be probed and indexed by the search engines, they need to know about your site’s existence first. This can be done via search engine submission for newer sites or let the search engines automatically find your site via reference links to your site from other sites. In either case, ultimately the search engine spider (a piece of software that examines your site for its content) needs to crawl your site and index its content for the use of search users. Now, there are two entities on your site that helps these spiders probe your site effectively. They are:

#1 Robot.txt: Once your website is submitted to the search sites, the search engine spiders (also known as crawlers or bots) will attempt to navigate your site to understand its content. A robot.txt file maintained on your website will tell the spiders which all folders and modules on your web server are allowed to be crawled by them. (The format and composition of robot.txt is not in the scope of this post)

#2 Sitemap.xml: Once the robot.txt allows spiders to crawl certain areas of your server folders, the sitemap pitches in to provide more details. The sitemap.xml file contains all your pages, posts, links to tools and web applications etc that need to be made visible to the public users (and hence to be indexed by the search engines). Sitemap.xml will also contain more details on these pages such as when it was last changed, the priority of the page etc that help spiders to decide on when to index them.

Basically robot.txt provides folder/file level access details and sitemap.xml provides detailed information on pages. These two files are essential for any website that is search engine friendly and they are usually maintained at the root folder of your website.

Page & link level instructions to the spiders

In addition to the above to files, there are page and link level instructions that help spiders to decide whether to index a page or a target page that is pointed to by a link on the page (URL). These are page meta tags and link properties and I shall talk about them in another post soon.

The pioneering technology, that will let users to multi-task while on the move, will have two 15.4 in screens, reports the Telegraph.

The PC is estimated to cost enthusiasts around 3,000 dollars but not without concerns regarding the weight of the Spacebook and the pressure on the batteries to meet the energy demands of running two screens.

Gordon Stewart, the founder of gScreen, told US technology website Gizmodo, that the gadget could be expected to be up for grabs on Amazon by December this year, provided final modifications had been dealt with.e said: "We designed this knowing that many may not need the extra screen at all times."

Organic or local food? The choice is tough: study

Organic foods may be healthier and may not tax the environment, but choosing them is not an easy option for consumers when the other option is locally grown foods, says a new study.

Chengyan Yue, horticulture professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMTC), and colleague Cindy Tong investigated consumers' preferences and willingness to pay for organically grown and locally grown fresh produce.

The research team combined hypothetical and real experiments for the study, which was conducted with 365 volunteer participants at the Minnesota State Fair in August 2008.

The researchers found that consumers' willingness to pay for organic produce was about the same as they would pay for local produce. But the frequency of purchases was different for organic and local produce.

Participants were asked: 'When you buy fruits and vegetables, how often do you buy locally grown (or organically grown) fresh produce when it is available?'

For locally grown produce, 14 percent of participants chose 'always', 40 percent chose 'most times', 38 percent chose 'sometimes', and eight percent chose 'seldom' or 'never'.

For organic produce, six percent chose 'always,' 15 percent chose 'most times,' 39 percent chose 'sometimes,' and 40 percent chose 'seldom' or 'never.'

Consumers considered 'good for health' and 'safe to eat' as their main reasons for purchasing organic produce, says an UTMC release.

These findings were published in HortScience.

New gene linked to progressive hearing loss identified

Scientists from The Scripps Research Institute have discovered a gene responsible for progressive hearing loss.

The has team found a gene, called Loxhd1, which is necessary for maintaining proper functioning hair cells in the inner ear.

However, mutations in this gene can lead to degradation of the hair cells and a disruption of the process that enables hearing.

"It is thought that mutations in several hundred genes can lead to deafness," said team leader Ulrich Mueller, a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research.

"However, for many forms of deafness, we don't know what effects the genes have. In this new research, we have linked a previously uncharacterized gene to deafness, first in mice and then in humans," said Mueller.

During the study, researchers used a technique called forward genetics in their quest to better understand the genetic basis of hearing and hearing loss.

In forward genetics, scientists make mutations at random in germ cells, screen the resulting models for physical characteristics of interest (in this case hearing impairment), then amplify these traits through the breeding of several generations.

The gene responsible for the trait is then identified through positional cloning.

In this case, the scientists were able to generate a new mouse line with hearing impairment that they called samba and then clone the gene responsible, Loxhd1, which had never before been associated with deficits in hearing.

When the mice inherited two copies of the mutated gene, they were profoundly deaf shortly after birth.

This is the third hearing-related gene that the Mueller lab has discovered.

"In humans, the prevailing difficulty is progressive hearing loss," he said.

"As you age, you lose your hearing slowly. Since this mutation can lead to progressive hearing loss, it provides us with more information on the genetic underpinnings of this condition and gives us clues as to how it might be corrected," he added.

The study appears in American Journal of Human Genetics, a publication of Cell Press.

2 new antibodies may pave way for powerful AIDS vaccine

In what may be called the discovery of an Achilles heel on the AIDS virus, researchers have found two powerful new antibodies to HIV, called PG9 and PG16, that could ultimately lead to a powerful vaccine for the deadly disease.

Researchers associated with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), at The Scripps Research Institute, and at the biotechnology companies The re-clone Sciences and Monogram Biosciences, made the breakthrough discovery, which they will use to craft novel approaches to designing an AIDS vaccine.

Moreover, the global collaboration and process that led to the discovery of the two new broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) are likely to produce more such antibodies, which may in turn reveal additional vulnerabilities of HIV, adding still more vitality to the effort to develop a vaccine against AIDS.

"The findings themselves are an exciting advance toward the goal of an effective AIDS vaccine because now we've got a new, potentially better target on HIV to focus our efforts for vaccine design. And having identified this one, we're set up to find more, which should further accelerate global efforts in AIDS vaccine development," said Wayne Koff, senior vice president of research and development at IAVI.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies to HIV are produced by a minority of HIV-infected individuals and are distinct from other antibodies to HIV because they neutralize a high percentage of the many types of HIV in circulation worldwide.

It is widely believed that to prevent HIV infection an AIDS vaccine would need to teach the body to produce these powerful antibodies before exposure to the virus.

Animal experiments have suggested that conceptually such a vaccine would work.

Before the discovery, only four antibodies to HIV had been discovered that were widely agreed to be broadly neutralizing.

The two newly discovered bNAbs-PG9 and PG16-are the first to have been identified in more than a decade and are the first to have been isolated from donors in developing countries, where the majority of new HIV infections occur.

Besides, previously identified bNAbs against HIV have functioned by binding to places on HIV that have proven difficult to exploit by means of vaccine design.

"These new antibodies, which are more potent than other antibodies described to date while maintaining great breadth, attach to a novel, and potentially more accessible site on HIV to facilitate vaccine design. So now we may have a better chance of designing a vaccine that will elicit such broadly neutralizing antibodies, which we think are key to successful vaccine development," said Dennis Burton at Scripps.

The two new antibodies target a region of the viral spike used by HIV to infect cells.

The viral spike glycoproteins, termed gp120 and gp41, are highly variable and have evolved to thwart immune attack.

But biochemical studies suggest that PG9 and PG16 target regions of gp120 that do not change, which probably accounts for their breadth of neutralization.

Now researchers are planning to focus on studying the molecular structure of PG9 and PG16 and that of the region they target on the HIV spike.

They will use this information to try to devise immunogens-the active ingredients of vaccines-that elicit similar antibodies.

Another feature we miss every time we go back to Vista is Windows 7's updated notifications panel, where you can go in and either switch off things like a program's control panel or updater icon, or at least tell it not to appear unless it's got something it needs to tell you.

This clears up vast amounts of real-estate, if admittedly not as well as our suggested method: sending painful electrical shocks to any programmers who insist on giving their bloody update programs a permanent place in our computers' memory. (Don't ask about the second offence...)

Finally, at least for now, Windows 7's actual windows are much smarter. Drag one to the top of the screen and it maximizes. Break it away and it goes back to its original size. It's a snap to make one fill half the screen, or 'peek' through it to your desktop, all at the touch of a key or sweep of the mouse.

While Windows 7 upgrades the OS itself, not everything from Vista has made the cut. The much-ballyhooed but rarely used Sidebar is gone for instance, usurped by the almost equally ignored Gadgets, which has now been given the run of the desktop instead. Tools such as Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, Windows Calendar and Windows Movie Maker are also missing in action, with the idea being that you just download the free Windows Live suite that ties into Microsoft's assorted online services.

This isn't a problem though, and means that when you do download them, at least you'll be getting the latest versions, complete with any added features. It also means that Microsoft has more of an incentive to keep building on them, instead of holding out for Windows 8.

Despite the cuts, most of the classic apps are still around, and updated for the new version. If you love the Ribbon from Microsoft Office 2007, you'll be happy to see its inclusion in the new WordPad. If not, well, bad news.

Paint has also seen an upgrade, dragging it kicking and screaming into, oh, at least 1992. At this heady rate of progress, we'll be ready to rock the artistic world with the latest image editing technologies roughly five minutes before the heat of the sun kills everything. So that's something to look forward to.

In theory then, we're in for a good release. However, the devil is in the details - and that's always going to be more subjective. Speaking personally, and having used Windows 7 for a couple of months, I'll be picking it up at launch.

The only showstopper bug I've encountered is a minor one involving my volume controls - Windows 7 tells me that it can't find my sound card, but this isn't enough to stop it playing sound.

If there's a disappointment, it's that there's nothing in Windows 7 that lets me personally do anything new, or even in a particularly new way. Speech and handwriting recognition aren't going to take over from the good old mouse and keyboard any time soon, I'm still too lazy to make proper use out of My Documents when the Desktop is available, and the only thing that happens if I test my monitor for multitouch support is an unsightly fingerpint. There are definitely features for more ambitious users - the new version of Media Centre is particularly good - but overall, it's all fairly familiar stuff.

However, here's the important bit. It's familiar in a good way. It's familiar in the sense that after a couple of minutes, you're ready to use it and get on with your day. Where Vista repeatedly got in the way with its new features and flashy ways of doing everything Windows 7 keeps to itself and dials out the distractions.

That's what marks it down as a mature platform, new features be damned, and why I'll be installing it on my computers out of choice, rather than the necessity I felt when Vista was talking up DX10 and its other landmark changes. It's not simply a new shiny thing, but a much needed second change for the Vista OS that's going to be the PC standard for a while yet.

To date, researchers have focussed on younger age groups in the belief that obese children become obese adults.

But the new findings indicate that obese adults led to obese children.

"It is the reverse of what we have thought and this has fundamental implications for policy," the BBC quoted study leader Professor Terry Wilkin as saying.

He added: "We should be targeting the parents and that is not something we have really done to date."

The researchers took weight and height measurements for children and parents over a three-year period.

It was found that 41 percent of the eight-year-old daughters of obese mothers were obese, as compared to four percent of girls with normal-weight mothers.

However, there was no difference in the proportion for boys.

For boys, 18 percent of the group with obese fathers were also obese, compared to just three percent for those with normal-weight fathers.

And again, there was no difference in the proportion for girls.

Kary Mullis, Ph.D., realized that a combination of readily available laboratory reagents and materials would promote the exponential replication of DNA in a test tube. He realized that over a billion copies of a DNA fragment could be made in an afternoon! Upon returning to Cetus Corporation, he started laboratory work that would lead to a revolutionary patent.

In 1987, US Patent 4,683,202 "process for amplifying nucleic acid sequences" issued. The Polymerase Chain Reaction or PCR method would soon be used world wide to perform biotechnology experiments, clone genes, identify pathogens, and convict criminals. It also did not take long for it to make the leap to Hollywood: PCR was highlighted in the movie Jurassic Park and is used weekly in the CSI television series.

A patent is a monopoly granted by the US government on inventions. Hoffman-La Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical giant recognized the commercial potential for PCR and purchased the family of PCR patents for $300 million in 1990. The original Mullis patent expired a few years ago, but a "picket fence" of other patents still protects various aspects of the method. Hoffman-La Roche licensed the technology broadly and has developed many of its own products based upon the method. The return on investment of their $300 million has been huge!

A patent can be issued on "any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement method". Examination of the scientific literature demonstrated that it was novel because no prior use of PCR could be found. They also successfully demonstrated that it was non-obvious to one skilled in the art since all the chemicals and methods were commonly used in biotechnology laboratories prior to 1983, but no one had the flash of inspiration to combine them in a fashion to exponentially amplify genetic material. There are lot of changes in the thinking of students now a days, not like 10 year before just choose the subject of interest there parents suggest or just follow the route of his brother or sister. Now they think what they need, where they fit, which field is stable. There is golden period for computer and information technology but there is always dark side of it ups and down in this filed, maximum impact of recession, in one word unstable filed.

Here I am going discuss about the quit old but always stable, growing field BIOTECHNOLOGY or Life science. I remember a funny statement made by my professor "Until there is diseases in the world we have job" no government or institution deny fund to a cancer institute to stop there research toward a cancer cure but in turn they will stop production or dismiss 1000 worker from a car company during economic crisis like what happened now. Even you agree with this compromise is in it. There are many disciplines in this field ranging from Biological Scientists, Biomedical Engineers, Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Forensic Scientists, Medical Scientists, Pharmacists and more. And there lot opportunities all over the world and every country spend lot of there annual budget for and creating institutes research centers across there country. Next question arise in your mind is how much I get, is it comparable to other fields, Yes off course the pay is almost equal to other top professionals.
